The 2020 Mentorship Programme for Students of the Global Majority is a programme designed to offer support, guidance and empowerment to those who come from underrepresented backgrounds in the creative arts. Students will receive 1-1 monthly support for the duration of the academic year from a trained mentor. This will be a safe space for them to offload, share, connect and learn from those who have walked before them.
The programme was set up in 2020 following conversations surrounding the race related issues and experience of students in UK drama schools.
The mentee and mentor meet once a month for an online zoom check in with additional support in-between. The mentors are there to listen non judgmentally, offer guidance through their own personal experience and to be a representation of what the mentees can achieve. Through that, mentees receive a safe space. They are able to get free support and ask questions that sometimes their drama schools are unable to answer. It empowers them to see their own space in the industry and to not feel as afraid of the future. They can talk through their fears and be reassured.
The goal of this programme to change the narrative - to stand with those facing adversity, and work to ending those experiences altogether. It’s time to take ourselves out of boxes, smash through glass ceilings, tell our own stories and create our own narrative.
